iPhone 3G Front Camera

A lot of people it seems have noticed something on Phil Shiller's iPhone (3G?) during the WWDC 2008 Keynote.

Essentially it's this: When he moves the iPhone it's flat screen reflects the lights in the room revealing lots and lots of smudges on the phone and what appears to be a lens or other round object in the iPhone's upper left corner (opposite the camera on the non-3G iPhone.

Some say it's a smudge, others say it's a bubble in the protective case the iPhone is in, other still claim it's a camera and other say it's the light sensor.

A Smudge: Unlikely I say due to the light's reflection on the surface with the movement of it underneath. If you watch the clip you may see what I mean. Also, no other smudge seems to look similar. One thing to think about is how very circular the "smudge" is.

A Bubble in the Protective Case: I don't know but I would think that Apple wouldn't want to show a flawed case (even if it's not theirs) to the masses. And the object in question seems a bit large for a manufacturing flaw.

A Camera: Possible as there have been allegedly leaked photos of a videoconferencing feature in the iPhone 3G on many Apple rumor sites. If you look here at a disassembled original iPhone you'll see the camera on the opposite side of the mysterious object on the 3G iPhone but there is something on the same side only I'm not sure what it is. It looks like something mounted there.

Light Sensor: Unlikely, it's larger and in a different place.

Some other bits of info: When you head to the iPhone web page Photos + Camera and look at the "Learn More" link for Snap Photos it links to: http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/gps.html which is certainly not about photos. Also, there was hardly a word if any, at all about photos during the keynote. Also, recall that Apple waiting until a week before the first iPhone's launch to mention Youtube and the glass screen.

Interesting as well are the leaked photos (now official) of iPhone 3G cases which show a larger opening near the earpiece. But are they wide enough for a camera in the top left of the iPhone 3G?

One thing I noticed is that Phil is certainly pushing hard on the iPhones screen at one point, so hard in fact that his finger slips upwards. Watch closely starting at 1:16:43 when he scrolls the iPhone. His thumb slips upwards.

UPDATE: It's not a camera.
